SERVICES

“This Is Your Life” Narrative for Elders™ is an innovative service offered by The Gerontologist. We capture the Life Review/Life Narrative on video and digitize it as a keepsake and memento for family, love ones and future generations.

A “This Is Your Life!” Narrative allows elder persons to:

* Meditate and reminisce on their lives
* Describe (in writing or orally) their life experiences
* Identify significant moments and achievements
* Describe significant others who enriched their lives
* Describe activities that enriched their lives

“This Is Your Life” Narrative for Elders™ fosters an appreciation and recognition of how the elderly have enriched the lives of their families and their communities.

Background Information

As the population of older persons increases, the concern to ensure their successful aging and quality of life is also increasing. Recreational and leisure activities make a significant contribution to this growing trend.

In 2000, 35.0 million people 65 years of age and older were counted in the United States, mainland. This represents a 12.0 percent increase since 1990, when 31.2 million older persons were counted. Despite the number of people 65 years and older increased between 1990 and 2000, their proportion of the total dropped from 12.6 percent in 1990 to 12.4 percent in 2000.

There were 18.4 million older people aged 65 to 75 years old in 2000 making up 52 percent of the older population. Centenarians, those persons 100 years old and older, are growing in number. In 2000 there were 50,454 centenarians, or 1 out of every 5,578 people.

Aging often brings with it, deterioration in health, mobility, motor skills, cognitive abilities, memory loss, and lower metabolism and inactivity. Leisure and recreational activities play a vital role in providing stimulation and helping elders obtain their optimum state of well-being. It is this understanding of the issues and a genuine respect for our aging population that fostered the development of the Leisure Gerontology Program.
